(the naughty side...)

It was Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840 - 1902) , a German psychiatrist, who in 1886 in his book « Psychopathia Sexualis » first officially coined the terms « sadism » derived from the brutal sexual practices depicted by the Marquis de Sade and « masochism » derived from the family name of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (1836 – 1895), an Austrian author (« Venus in fur ») who, having the opposite of Sade's tendencies, preferred to be a suffering slave. The main difference in the etymological process/treatment of the terms was that, contrary to Sade, von Sacher-Masoch was still alive when his name served as a reference to his « perversion » and that did not please him at all ! He didn’t have to « suffer » (if I may say so) long because he died soon after in a mental asylum (like Sade). Von Krafft-Ebing suspected sadism and masochism were inter-connected but it will be Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939) who will later establish them as contrary and complementary elements with the term « sadomasochism ». Just to let you know…
