It was apparently an Italian novel which was in 2006 at the origin of putting locks on bridges, particularly this one, and, with the word of mouth (and the World Wide Web), it became a must-do-thing for young romantics from all over the world. Why not? (I bet some of them kept a spare key though). The thing is that, with the million padlocks which were clipped on its railings, this frail metallic bridge, built only for pedestrians, was 45 tons heavier than it was supposed to be... and it was about to collapse... and that would not have been romantic anymore.

And now that the locks have disappeared (not completely though as you can maybe tell on the picture here below), lovers can always go make a vow at the wall of the "I love yous" (that we see during the walking tour of Montmartre), a wall where the words 'je t'aime" are written in 282 languages... sigh...
